Helmsman's
Practical
The
Helmsman's course is an ideal introduction to motor cruising, perfect
for anyone who has had a taste with friends or family and would like to
try more.

Boathandling - Basic seamanship - Safety at sea - Introduction to engines

Dayskipper
Practical
The
practical course gives you a chance to take charge on short passages under
instruction with plenty of advice and help from the instructor.

practical experience plus Day Skipper Theory course or equivalent

Boathandling - Pilotage - Basic navigation - Skippering technique
RYA
/ MCA Coastal Skipper Practical plus exam
The
more ambitious motor cruising skipper can improve his or her skills on
a Coastal Skipper Course. The course consists of skippered passages by
each of the trainees in a whole variety of situations.
Previous
Experience: Competent
Day Skipper standard with Coastal Skipper Theory certificate or equivalent.
15 days seatime (2 as skipper) - 300 NM logged. 8 night hours. VHF or
SRC radio certificate and First Aid certificate.

days onboard plus one day for exam
Content:
More
advanced boathandling, skippering techniques and navigation for coastal
passage making.
RYA
/ MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Practical work-up plus exam
Previous
Experience: Competent
Coastal Skipper standard. 50 days seatime (5 as skipper) - 2500 NM logged
- 5 passages over 60m including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper. VHF or SRC
radio certificate and First Aid certificate.

days onboard plus one day for exam
Content:
Not
a course but a refresher / work-up / exam preparation. Aimed at experienced
skippers with the knowledge and ability to skipper vessels on offshore
passages within the Limited European Trading Area.
RYA
/ MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Sail to Power Conversion
Previous
Experience: RYA
Yachtmaster Sail qualification plus 1250 NM logged - 25 days seatime -
3 as skipper. 3 passages over 60m including 1 overnight, 1 as skipper
- all on power driven vessels.

days onboard plus one day for exam
Content:
A
conversion course for those holding the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Sail)
qualification, who wish to obtain a power endorsement. A reduced timescale
exam is taken on completion. Please note the previous experience requirements.
Theory
Courses
Day
Skipper Shorebased and
Coastal Skipper Shorebased courses
are available at most Technical Colleges / Adult Education Colleges, or
they can be taken as correspondence courses / distance learning packages.
Alternatively, Prestige Power can advise on recommended organisations
offering these as full-time courses.
Commercial
Endorsements
Skippers
of vessels under 24m LOA used for sport or recreation on a commercial
basis can apply for a commercial endorsement to Coastal Skipper
/ Yachtmaster qualifications. In order to have a certificate endorsed,
an applicant must obtain a medical fitness certificate and attend a Basic
Sea Survival course.
